9 photos of 1960s fashion by Dutch news photographers

Split image: Mary Quant, smiling, with a sharp dark bob on the left, and a model in a pale hooded jacket posing on a zebra crossing on the right.

Between 1964 and 1969, photographers from the Dutch press agency Anefo covered fashion shows, trade fairs and street scenes, mostly in the Netherlands. The agency’s archive is held by the Dutch National Archives, and these nine pictures are marked CC0 on Wikimedia Commons. They run from a Paris bridal gown to patent-leather caps, with a flea market and a dance floor in between.

Mary Quant arrives at Schiphol

The record calls Mary Quant the English queen of fashion and dates her arrival at Schiphol to December 16, 1966. Her hair is cut in one sharp line, with a fringe as straight as a ruler, and she is smiling broadly.

Plastic beat fashion on a crosswalk

On August 23, 1965, the record says, Josje Leger and Marijke Kooger showed a new plastic beat fashion called “Bewogen Mode.” A model poses in a hooded jacket and trousers, one hand on the hood and the other arm flung out, while a car rolls toward the crossing behind her.

Tropical prints on Leidseplein

The record calls this Tropicalia fashion from England and has Collin Glascoe on Amsterdam’s Leidseplein with models on March 25, 1968. The prints are leaves and flowers, the hems run from floor length to well above the knee, and the whole group crosses the street like a small parade.

Dancing at the Boekenbal

The record files this under dancing at the Boekenbal, or book ball, in Amsterdam on February 24, 1967. Short dresses, long prints and patterned tights fill the floor, and the dancer in the striped dress and white knee socks is caught mid-step.

Stage costumes at the Waterlooplein

The record describes hip fashion at the Waterlooplein market in Amsterdam on March 20, 1967: theater costumes and army jackets. A man in what looks like a stage tunic stands at the rack beside a shopper in a plaid coat, and the rack is packed so tightly that the clothes seem to be holding each other up.

Autumn fashion among the narcissi

On April 13, 1967, according to the record, Jean Allen of England showed new autumn fashion at the Hilton hotel, and this outdoor shot was taken in a park among narcissi. The record lists the location as Great Britain. The clothes are for autumn and the flowers are pure spring, which is how the fashion calendar tends to work.

Two models and Mario’s shop

On November 2, 1965, the hairdresser Mario showed clothes with two models outside his newly renovated Amsterdam salon, The Trend, for a show called Flashing Fashion, according to the record. The tights do most of the talking, with zigzags on one model and stripes on the other. Mario stands to the side in sunglasses, looking like the host.

A patent-leather coat and cap

At the Intercontex women’s fashion fair at the RAI in Amsterdam on October 13, 1969, the record notes one detail: the coat and the cap are made of the same patent leather. The shine does most of the work, and she holds the collar up with one hand while looking sideways at the camera.

A bridal gown from Jacques Heim

The record calls this a long bridal gown by Jacques Heim under the heading “New Paris fashion 1964,” and dates it to February 18, 1964. Heim lived from 1899 to 1967, and his fashion house outlasted him by two years. The veil and train spill across the floor in a long, pale puddle.
